STRENGTHENED GLASS DETECTOR SG2700

Strengthened / Tempered Glass Detector

Confirm if your single or double pane glass has been strengthened.   Strengthened glass can include Heat Strengthened Glass, Tempered Glass and Safety Glass. It is also sometimes referred to as “Toughened Glass.”  Test single or multiple panes – on double pane glass, you can test both panes at the same time. This is especially helpful with installed windows when one side of the glass is difficult or impossible to get to. It is also much more efficient in the factory – being able to test either side offers huge time savings and is simpler than being required to test both sides.  Identify thickness of the first pane of glass.

Features:

  • Rugged LED Technology allows the SG2700 to stand up to bumps and drops in the field. Filament lamp based technology as a light source is fragile and can break easily if it is dropped in the field. The use of LEDs in the SG2700 eliminates expensive repairs and downtime caused by damaged instruments.
  • Specialized Optics allow users to view the surface reflections head-on. There is no need to tilt your head to a specific angle to view the strengthened glass test results.
  • Energy Efficient Design. The SG2700 is powered by a standard 9-volt alkaline battery that is simple to purchase and replace. There are no inconvenient power cords involved. An automatic power-down feature also further extends battery life.
  • Light Blocking Cloth for extreme lighting conditions is included. The unit also comes with a protective carrying case.

Applications:

  • In the factory to confirm stacks of glass: If crates are unmarked, the SG2700 can offer a quick test to confirm the glass has been processed (strengthened). This can be helpful at the glass processing plant where the glass is tempered, or in the assembly plant where the windows are being constructed. This test certainly beats the alternative destructive test of breaking a piece of the glass to see if it had been processed.
  • In the field to confirm strengthened glass in windows: This is necessary at times when the tempered stamp on the bottom corner of the window is forgotten or is hidden behind the jamb of the window.
  • Window replacement applications: When replacing a window, determine whether the glass being replaced is tempered to reorder and replace with the correct product. It is not uncommon for older windows to not contain any type of stamp indicating whether it’s tempered glass on the bottom corner of the window.
  • Window tinting applications: It is often important for tinters to know if the windows they are about to tint contain tempered glass. It could impact the type of film selected for the project.
  • IG repair (seal failure): It is necessary to know whether windows that are being repaired contain tempered glass, as repair technicians cannot drill holes into tempered glass.
  • Building inspectors and architects: The SG2700 is the perfect tool to spot-check windows on a job site and to check incoming windows to confirm the product has been labeled properly.

Important Information about Strengthened Glass
ASTM C-1048 and ANSI Z97-1 and 16CFR1201 specify three classifications for Strengthened Glass:

Strengthened Classification               Surface Compression
Heat Strengthened Glass…………………………….3500 – 7500 psi
Tempered Glass………………………………………….> 10,000 psi
Safety Glass…………………………………………………15,000 – 22,000 psi

The SG2700 Strengthened / Tempered Glass Detector does not differentiate between these three classifications. It simply confirms that the glass has been strengthened in one of the three capacities. See the user manual for more details.

To use, simply slide the meter across the glass and conveniently watch the reflections from the glass head on. As the meter crosses stress lines in the glass (caused by the strengthening process), the resulting surface reflections from our wide array of light sources will change color. The special optics of the SG2700 provide a vivid change in color, and is great for applications where the stress lines are more difficult to view.
